Layering Basic Pieces For Dummies.

Layering basics for work

Disclaimer- If you are a fashionista, then this post is not for you.

I live in Chennai. Chennai does not get cold. Hence layering is never a necessity here. But of course when I had gone back home to Bangalore in January, I got to enjoy the nip in the air and did a shoot with some simple layering. I hoping that this post will be useful for those of you who still have some chilly weather to enjoy. I am not master at the art of layering, so this is literally for those like me who just want to keep it simple and chic.

The Formal Look

I miss being able to wear formals. I wore formals a lot during my post grad, because our college had a dress code and we were only allowed formals or salwars during the week. I invested in so so many formal pants and shirts and scarfs at that time. Then I started working as a teacher and had a complete wardrobe shift. I had to wear saris and salwars and I fell in love with ethnic wear for an everyday basis. I really don't use my sari collection enough and that's why I am doing the #100Sareepact this year. God, I get so distracted!!

The point is that I have just 1 or 2 formal-ish pants left in my collection and this is one of my favourites. This particular beige trouser is super old and I know I have to replace it at the earliest.

So I chose to pair it with a white shirt (I wanted to write crisp white shirt, but by the time we shot this it was not so crisp) and a dark blue sweater top. What I love about this top is that I can wear it as just a sweater top or layer it over a shirt. It can be made to look formal or worn more casually. And let me not forget to mention that is so uber comfortable. Why does Wills Lifestyle not make any more pieces like this, I have no idea!!

For accessories I decided to play with the blue tones and chose this slightly long pair of drop earrings.  from Confusion Fashion Accessories. Now ideally a stone bracelet would be super elegant but I kind of went with a mint one. I felt like it added a fun element to the entire look.

A bun is probably the best hairstyle to show off the earrings and I kept the makeup very minimal with just a metallic lip.

This outfit can be worn to work, to work events, or even to a formal dinner when you haven't shaved your legs.

The Casual look

Now before we move on to look 2, promise me you won't laugh. I know this is so not my usual style, but I just wanted to try something different.

Layering a shirt over a tee shirt is something that I have seen a  lot of guys do and a few women pull off with panache. I am not one of those women normally. We were on holiday in Munnar and I thought I would just try layering a shirt over a tee shirt. I liked how it looked and decided to go ahead and show you guys.(Please excuse the pictures. They were taken in the mist with a phone camera. See this is why I totally need to get a DSLR soon.)

Since I didn't want to get too experimental. I decided to just go ahead and play with just black. The tee shirt was sort of a floral graphic tee with hints of grey which I tied in with the grey belt.

I went for a grunge look with smoked out eyeshadow , a darker lipstick and my favourite choker from Macreme.

This was actually perfect for the day because when it got warmer I could choose to not layer the shirt and when it got colder, I buttoned down the shirt and wore a sweater over it. It was comfortable for an entire day out.

This is how I chose to layer some basic coloured pieces. I really liked how they turned out. Like I mentioned before, I don't consider this to be the ultimate guide to layering. Maybe its like baby steps?

What do you guys think about the outfits? Do you like any of them? Let me know in the comments section below.
